I bought the Space Ghost Coast to Coast DVD sets 1, 2 and 3 and have finished watching the first two. (Volume 3 was released just this year - April 12, 2005).
For those who don’t know, Space Ghost Coast to Coast is on the Cartoon Network and recasts a 1960’s cartoon character as a talk show host. Space Ghost “interviews celebrities” and they generally talk nonsense. The interview subjects are actually filmed ahead of time in front of a black screen without really knowing what the show is about and then the show creators edit together old cartoon footage and re-dub Space Ghost’s lines.
The show began in 1994 and even though new episodes are few and far between—there hasn’t been a new episode since early 2004—it is still considered an active and ongoing program. There are plenty of fan inspired websites out there. They can fill you in on all the details better than I can. I just love the absurd comedy and non sequitur jokes that this show is all about.
Hands down my favorite moment so far is in the tribute to the late Sonny Sharrock episode. The creators of the SGC2C were fans of Sonny and had tapped him to record the show’s theme as well as some incidental music. He died shortly after recording the tracks for Space Ghost and the folks involved in the cartoon production decided to do a tribute that featured his music. Right in the middle of this episode, Space Ghost’s TV show set begins to shake and he announces that they’re under attack! The screen goes to an old fashioned TV test pattern with the words “Under Attack - Please Stand By” on it and we’re treated to a few minutes of wigged out wailing guitar solo by Sonny. I was laughing so hard wondering what the general public might think if they were just flipping the TV dial some late night and saw that on the screen—and how would that fly in this age of post 9/11 paranoia?
