Mixerman

MixermanIf you’re a musician (or not) who has spent any time in a recording studio (or not), you’ll be rolling on the floor laughing at the tales of Mixerman.

Taken from the online bulletin board postings of the mysterious Mixerman (real identity unknown), we’re treated to the ins and outs of a major label recording session for an unknown band called “Bitch Slap” with a big name producer referred to as “Willy Show” (all the names have been changed to protect the guilty). The book includes the never before posted conclusion to the story that was left hanging online.

Man. This is a fun read. I’ve done sessions before and I feel like I may have been a bit of a Lance Nephew in my youth. Too bad. Thanks for the link. This book is certainly going on my wish list.
PS: Are those your ‘skins’ on Soul Roatation or were you using triggers? The drums on that sounded really crisp and consistent. Always wondered.

I think they were mine. If not using my actual kit, they would most likely be real drums.

Soul Rotation was recorded on this odd 32 track Mitsubishi digital machine. It was huge and they shipped it down from NYC to the old “Warehouse” studio on Delaware Ave. A couple of guys had to carry it up a long flight of stairs. At one point we actually tried punching in the whole band – and it worked! Anyway – maybe that had something to do with the sounds on that record. Everybody hates that record but I like it OK. We spent far too much money on it though.

When recording with Brian Beattie in Austin, we often used a hodge-podge of drums borrowed from other folks around town.

Priceless. That was one of my favorite albums. I’m a production-loving bitch sometimes. Odd that I don’t own it (my cassette has long since bio-degraded).
