I know it’s been out a few years already, but I’ve just now read Dave Egger’s A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius in two short bursts a few months apart. The memoir is interesting, entertaining and quirky—maybe a bit overly clever at some points for using some page formatting and writing gimmicks but still a great read. AHWoSG is largely based on Egger’s life in the early 1990’s when he was in his 20’s and raising his kid brother after both of their parents die from cancer within weeks of one another. The book is moving, personal and funny in a self deprecating way.
I’ll leave you with three links to learn more. First, Eggers himself answers a few questions via email and then in an addendum writes on the concept of “Selling Out”. Next we have a bookseller who plainly states “I. Don’t. Like. Dave. Eggers.”. Lastly we have a rebuttal from the bookseller’s coworker.
