This one has been in rotation on the car CD changer since I got it weeks ago. Skip is an excellent guitar player and purveyor of guitar, organ, and drums trio jazz of which I’m a big fan. You can hear samples of the whole thing over at CD Baby. Skip’s background is full of twists and turns - like some of his music. Bear Flag was recorded live in a big recording room at Pierce College in California and I’ve also got a great CD of a live set he did in Philly called Out Of Time!
Here’s how the disc came my way. I’d been checking in on Skip’s blog once in a while based on recommendations from Mike Ace over at Irregular Orbit. Seems Skip is on the Sound Scavengers list serve and was a Philly boy before moving to the left coast. Amusingly, Mike noticed Skip wearing a Dead Milkmen T-Shirt in one of his video dispatches. I made a blog comment about his impeccable taste in tee’s and we swapped CD’s. Skip is still a big champion of the Philly music scene he grew up in - and not just the great jazz the city has produced but the punk and rock scenes as well. I’m looking forward to catching a live set when he makes it back to town one of these days.

Actually, Skip is not on the Sound-Scavengers list (unless he’s hiding under another name). He is on the fabled Exotica list, however.
