The Higher Power of Ridiculous

Matt Phelan, the illustrator for the recent Newbery award winning children’s bookThe Higher Power of Lucky” happens to be a friend of ours. As you may have seen on the news, there has been an uproar over the author’s use of the word “scrotum” within the the first few paragraphs of the story. I find the fuss quite ridiculous and hope those mis-guided librarians come to their senses and place the book on their shelves. After all, this is a story for 9-11 year olds; I’m pretty sure that word is one they’ve heard already.

All this lead up to tell you there is an extensive interview with Matt on the A Thousand Times No blog (though it was recorded before all the fuss).

One Response to “The Higher Power of Ridiculous”

  1. Jan Gilles Says:

Ridulous, is just the beginnning of the over reaction to the word scrotum. What I love is that Lucky herself did not know the meaning of the word. You discover this about half way through the book.
This book is a story that will capture the heart of every adult and child that reads it.
